During the Gempei Kassen 源平合戦　(the wars between the rival Taira and the Minamoto families) a Samurai known as Isa Tomomune 伊達朝宗
and his family provided invaluable service to the man who would become the country's first Kamakura based Sei i tai shôgun - Minamoto no Yoritomo

A short time later, further assistance proved useful as well during the power struggle that Yoritomo-dono had with his own younger brother, Minamoto no Yoshitsune who reneged on his own family after the wars and backed the enemyTaira .

As a reward for this service, Isa Tomomune was awarded the lands and town of Date 伊達 (the village in the Province of Mutsu-no-kuni , in northern Ôshû , where they had come from). They were also given the privilege of using Date 伊達氏 as their family name.

This was in the year of the Rooster, the fifth year of Bunji 文治五 (1189), during the reign of the 82nd Mortal Emperor GoToba-Tennô 後鳥羽天皇.
As the water clock tipped over at the beginning of the Hour of the Dragon (8:00 AM) on the eighth day of the seventh lunar month in the first year of Einin, a son was born to the Samurai known as Jogoika (Secondary Junior 5th Ranked) Date Munetsuna 従五位下伊達宗綱。
This was during the reign of His Majesty the Emperor Fushimi-Tennô ïöå©ìVçc.
This child, Date Saburô Yukiie 伊達三郎行家 was raised with his older brothers, as befits the children of a proud warrior family - namely in the ways of horse and bow, of tactics and logistics.

By the time Yukiie had put on his cap and trousers of manhood in the 5th year of Einin (1597) he had proven himself to be strong and independant, respectful and intelligent. He was mindful of the monks and Buddhas, and honored the Kami (Natural Dieties) of the mountains.

The tree shrouded mountains of Ôshû and the valleys surrounding the family village were his training grounds. Wanderlust and rough terrain had become his friends.

Practicing his riding winter and summer, exploring far and wide, (often at the frustration of his mother) no location had been uninvestigated as the child grew up - especially enticing were the places of mystery, where the Kami were evident.

One such place of his childhood had become a favorite - a small tributary stream fed by the mountain rains known by locals as Tonbogawa - Dragonfly River. There was a place that young Yukiie felt at peace and at one with the world. Frequently, the young Samurai would take brushes, ink, and paper there to sketch the things he found.
In the course of his explorations, Yukiie met a young Kawachi Samurai's son who was known by the name of Kusunoki Masashige .

A fast and deep friendship was formed and grew.
As young men do, both competed against each other in wrestling and bowmanship, horse racing and sword training.

It had only been seven years since the last attempt at invasion from the Mongol armies of the Yuan, led by Kublai Khan. The two spared no effort to make ready in case they were called to offer their service in the southern shores of Hakata.
Hunting was a favorite pass time, where the young men could test themselves against each other, and many were the hours when they would ride throughout the hills in search of game. Wearing leg guards of spotted deer fur, and carrying strong bows wrapped in silk thread and lacquered against the weather, they bore quivers on their hips loaded with arrows that trained them for war.
There were times of course, when Yukiie's father, Munetsuna would be required to travel to the Cloisters surrounding the capital, or even into the environs of the Palace itself, performing services deemed important by his Lord.

Yukiie would often accompany the expeditions, riding beside his father on a horse draped in red silk cords, sitting in a lacquered saddle dusted with silver powder.

Visits to the various temples were common, where Monks, draped in their often washed black, orange and blue silken rags, estollled the Virtues of right thinking and enlightenment. Their esoteric knowledge intrigued Yukiie, who kept his ears and eyes open and never failed to seek out those who might answer hard pondered questions of the universe.

The wondrous buildings of the Capital, especially those of the Palace, were as different of an environment as they could be for a warrior child raised in the mountains.

There came a time whenYukiie found himself in the halls of the OnMyo Ministry, where magics were worked and mysterious rites were performed, divining things which Yukiie had never even contemplated in his mountainous Mutsu.

Every chance he got, he stole away to peak over the fences and through the shutters of those magical men.
On the 29th Day of the 3rd Month of the 2nd year of Bunpô (1318) The Son of Heaven GoDaigo Tennô took the Crysanthemum throne and reigned over the Heavens and the Earth. Great changes were made in the Government, and the People were made happy.

At the bequest of his father,Yukiie began to travel to the Nyoinriji Cloisters on the Holy MountYoshino bearing official messages and guarding traveling monks. He even performed service in the shadow of the most Holy Abbot and Prince of the Blood Son'chu, of the Enryakuji.
This person was the son of His Majesty, GoDaigo Tennô, placed in charge of the Cloisters when His Majesty ascended the Throne.

With proud form Yukiie made his way about Cloisters performing his duty.
Successful in his endeavors, he was commissioned thereafter to function as an imperial Courier, carrying important documents between temples, ensuring the safety of shipments of sacred scrolls, and performing such things as the Most Holy Prince of the Blood Son'chu desired.

It could even be said that a friendship of sorts developed between the Son of the Emperor and the Samurai from Mutsu. As the spirit of the Most Holy Prince of the Blood was gladdened by military training, He saw no reason why a samurai such asYukiie could not benifit from martial education offered in the dojo and fields of the Cloisters.

AsYukiie was perfunctory in the performance of his duties, as well as consistently diligent in his manner of dress and comportment, The Emperor's most Holy son saw fit to bend the ear of His Magesty and there came came a time whenYukiie was bestowed with Junior 6th Court Rank, so that he might be allowed to enter the Palace itself in the performance of his duties.

Warriors from Rokuhara and Kamakura took a great disliking for the methods of His Majesty, taking offence that He should want to rule the Lands by His own will, refusing to allow a puppet child (controlled by the Lords of Rokuhara) to sit on the throne.

Plots were set against His Magesty, who engaged in planning and subtrefuge of His own.
There came a time when the Lords of Rokuhara and their mighty armies of Eastern soldiers could no longer turn their eyes, and an army was sent from Kamakura to chastize His magesty.

Fearing for His own safety, the August Person fled into the Yoshino hills, bearing the Sacred Items of State, and amassing as much support as he could.

The Date were a factor in the protection of GoDaigo-tennô.

Isa Tomomune 伊達朝宗 was born in the year of the Rooster, in the fourth year of Daiji (大治四) (1129) making him aged 61 in 1189.
Tomomune was originally from the Isa district of Hitachi Province (now Ibaraki Prefecture), in the Tohoku (north eastern) region of Honshu, Japan, but settled later in the then sparsely populated Date district of Mutsu Province, just south west of the Sendai region. (now Fukushima Prefecture)
